5-a-side tactics
Five-a-side punishes standing still. With only four outfield players, every player defends and every player attacks, and small habits win games. These are the tactics that work in the cage and on the astro.

In short
- Start in a diamond (1-2-1): one back, two wide, one up front.
- Rotate: when one player goes forward, another covers behind.
- Defend as a unit: get compact, and press together or not at all.
- Pass and move; use the walls if your pitch has them.
- Use the keeper as a fifth outfield player when you have the ball.
Pick a shape
The 5-a-side lineup builder draws each one with your names on it.
- 1-2-1 (diamond): balanced, and the default for a reason.
- 2-2 (box): safer at the back, but the front two must track back.
- 1-1-2: two up front when you're chasing a game.
- 2-1-1: an extra defender when you're protecting a lead.
With the ball
- Pass and move: in a small space, the player who passes and runs is the one who's free.
- Width: two players near the side walls stretch the defence.
- Use the boards: a pass off the wall is a free one-two.
- Shoot early and low: small goals, quick keepers, low shots across the keeper go in.
- The keeper is a passer: roll it out quickly to the free player.
Without the ball
- Get compact: four players close together in front of the keeper are hard to play through.
- Press together: one player pressing alone just gets passed round.
- Mark the runner, not the ball.
- Last man back: always one player behind the ball.
The tactic that matters most
Fair teams. A good shape can't fix a game where the three best players are on one side. The team generator splits the players evenly, and Squadcard picks fair teams every week from everyone's ratings. More habits in our 5-a-side tips.
Pick fair 5-a-side teamsQuestions
What is the best 5-a-side formation?
The 1-2-1 diamond is the most balanced. Switch to a 2-2 to protect a lead or a 1-1-2 to chase a goal.
How do you defend in 5-a-side?
Get compact in front of the keeper, press together rather than alone, and always keep one player behind the ball.
Should the keeper play out in 5-a-side?
Yes, when you have the ball: a keeper who passes quickly gives your team an extra player.
How do you beat a better 5-a-side team?
Stay compact, defend together, and counter quickly with low early shots.
