Best 5-a-side apps

Spond vs TeamSnap

Both run teams across many sports, with availability, messages and payments in the app. The difference is what they're built around: Spond around clubs and their members, TeamSnap around a team's season.

In short

  • Spond: A free app for running clubs, teams and groups in any sport, with payments in the app.
  • TeamSnap: A well-known app for managing sports teams, clubs and leagues, from youth teams to adult leagues.
  • A weekly game with the same friends: you may want neither. See Squadcard below (we make it).

Side by side

Everything about Spond and TeamSnap comes from their own pages (listed at the bottom), checked on . A row only says what each describes itself doing; if a row isn’t here, it’s because one of them doesn’t cover it on those pages, which doesn’t mean it can’t.

Which one fits

Choose Spond if you run a club or several teams, especially with junior members and their parents, and want to collect fees in the app. It's free, with a small fee on each payment.

Choose TeamSnap if you coach or manage a team through a season, with a roster, a schedule of practices and games, jobs to hand out and drills to plan. Its free plan covers teams under 15 players; paid plans add availability tracking, bigger rosters and drills.

Or neither: Squadcard

If yours isn't a club or a coached team but the same friends playing every week, neither may be the right shape. Squadcard is built for that game: who's in from a link, fair teams from the ratings the players give each other, and pitch money tracked with no payment fees. We make it.

Questions

Is Spond or TeamSnap better?

It depends on what you run. For a club, with members, juniors and fees, Spond is built around that and is free apart from a fee on payments. For a team's season, with a roster, a schedule and practice plans, TeamSnap is built around that, with a free plan for teams under 15 players.

Are Spond and TeamSnap free?

Spond says it's free, with a small transaction fee on each payment. TeamSnap has a free plan for teams under 15 players, and paid plans that add more.

Which is better for a weekly 5-a-side?

Both can do it, but both are built for more than that. If it's one group of friends and one weekly game, an app made for that game (Squadcard is one) gets you who's in, fair teams and ratings without the club setup.

Can I use Squadcard with Spond or TeamSnap?

Yes. They don't connect, but nothing stops a club or team using Spond or TeamSnap while its weekly kickabout runs in Squadcard. Players join Squadcard from a link, with nothing to install.
