Team generator

7-a-side team generator

Fourteen players, two fair sides. Paste who's playing, say roughly how good each one is and mark the keepers. The teams are balanced on total level, not alternating picks, so nobody's left with the last two picked.

How good is everyone?Rough is fine. Tick the keepers and they’ll be split up.

Names show up here as you type them.

Keepers make or break 7-a-side

The goals are bigger than at 5-a-side and most groups play a proper keeper. Mark yours as GK and they go on opposite sides. With only one, the other side rotates someone in goal; leave the stand-ins unticked so they're balanced as outfield players.

Shape: six outfield players

Six outfield players is enough for a shape, and the usual one is two at the back, three in midfield and one up top, or 3-2-1 if your side would rather defend. Balancing by rating keeps the two strongest defenders from ending up on the same team.

15 or 16 players: rolling subs

With 16, each side gets a sub; rotate them in every goal or every ten minutes. With 15, one side has the extra player and the generator gives that side slightly weaker players, so it stays level.

Fair every week

The generator is only as fair as the levels you pick. In Squadcard, everyone rates everyone else after each game, so the ratings come from the people who were there and the teams get fairer on their own. Plus player cards that move with your form, a player of the match and a Team of the Week.

Questions

How many players is 7-a-side?

Seven per team, so 14 for a full game: a keeper and six outfield players each side. Most groups bring one or two subs and rotate them in.

What if 13 or 15 turn up?

Paste whoever's there. The generator makes the sides as even as it can, and the side with the extra player gets the slightly weaker ones.

How do I keep the keepers apart?

Mark them as keepers and they always go on opposite sides. If you only have one, the other side rotates someone in goal.

How do I stop guessing how good everyone is?

Squadcard does it for you: after each game everyone rates everyone else out of 10, and the app picks the teams from those ratings. Only totals are ever shown.
