What is Spond?

Spond is a free app for organising sports teams, clubs and groups: events, who's coming, messages and payments in one place. If your club has just moved to it, or you're wondering whether it suits your team, here's what it does, all from Spond's own pages, read on 23 October 2026.

In short

  • Spond is a free app for running sports teams, clubs and groups: events, availability, messages and payments.
  • It's free to use with no subscription; Spond's pages say the cost is a transaction fee when money is paid through it.
  • Admins create a group, invite members (up to 500, in the app and on the web) and send events people reply to.
  • Parents and guardians can manage their child's invitations and messages.
  • Clubs can add Spond Club for a membership register (also free, with payment fees) and a paid club website.

What Spond does

  • Events: single events, repeating events, a season planner and time polls, with a waiting list when an event is full.
  • Availability: requests asking members whether they can come.
  • Groups: one group per team, with members invited in the app or on the web (up to 500).
  • Messages: one place for the group's communication, with notifications to everyone at once.
  • Payments: collecting money for fixtures, lessons, classes, trips or membership.
  • Parents: guardians handle their child's invitations, messages and events.
  • Also: file storage for club documents and fundraising campaigns.

Is Spond free, and how does it make money?

Spond's pages say the app's core features, including all the payment tools, are free to use without a subscription. When members pay through Spond, standard transaction processing fees apply, and Spond says that's the only cost. Spond Club, the membership system for club admins, is described the same way: free, with a small transaction fee on payments. The one paid extra Spond describes is a club website, which comes with a free trial.

How Spond works, step by step

  • An admin creates a Spond profile and a group for the team.
  • Members are invited and join in the app (iPhone or Android).
  • The admin sends events and availability requests, and members reply whether they're coming.
  • Messages, payments and documents stay inside the group.

Joining, leaving and the coloured dots

  • Joining a group: groups are private, so you can't search for one. The admin adds you by email or phone number, or sends you a group code or an invitation link. To use a code, open Groups in the app and choose Enter code (it isn't on the web version).
  • Leaving a group: in the app, open Groups, choose the group, tap the three dots by the group picture, scroll to the bottom and leave, then confirm. On the web, it's the three dots at the right of the group's bar.
  • Subgroups: you can't leave one yourself. Ask the group's admin to remove you.
  • The coloured dots by members' names: they show which subgroups a member is in. Each subgroup usually has its own colour.

Who Spond suits, and what else there is

Spond is built for clubs and teams: juniors with parents, several teams under one club, training and matches through a season, fees collected in the app. For that, it does a lot for free. We compare it on the Spond alternative, Spond vs TeamSnap, Spond vs Heja and Spond vs WhatsApp pages, and with six other apps in the best football team management apps. Clubs that want their own branded app and website also look at Stack Team App.

For one group of friends playing every week, Squadcard is narrower and does different things: players say in or out from a link with no download, fair teams come from ratings everyone gives after each game, and it tracks who owes for the pitch without taking or moving money, so there are no payment fees.
