What makes a football nickname stick

  • It comes from the pitch: a save, a goal, a habit everyone has seen.
  • It's short enough to shout across a pitch.
  • The player can live with it. A nickname is a compliment with a wink, not a dig.
  • It's used straight away: the first game decides whether it lasts.

Nicknames by position

Keepers get the hands and the walls, defenders the rocks and the tanks, midfielders the engines and the maestros, strikers the foxes and the hitmen. Not sure who plays where? Football positions explained has every role. For the words that go with the nicknames, see football slang.

Put the nickname on a card

In Squadcard every player in a weekly game gets a card with a rating from their mates, and it moves with their form. Try the card maker with a nickname, or make a shirt for it with the football kit maker.
