How points per game works
Points per game is a team's points divided by the games it has played. With three points for a win and one for a draw, it runs from 0 to 3: a team on 2.00 is winning two games in every three, or winning half and drawing the other half.
It's how leagues are often settled when a season can't be finished, and the fairest way to compare teams that have played different numbers of games.
- 7 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses: 23 points from 12 games, 1.92 per game.
- 6 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss: 21 points from 10 games, 2.10 per game. Fewer points, but the better rate.
- Over an 18-game season, 2.10 per game is worth about 38 points.
What you need to reach a target
Add the games in the season and a target, and the last column shows the points per game each team needs from its remaining games. Above 3 (or 2, with two points for a win) means the target's out of reach.
