How Squadcard works

The football player rating app for your weekly game

After every game, everyone rates everyone else out of 10. Nobody sees who voted what, only the totals. Your card moves with your form, and next week's teams are picked from the ratings.

A Squadcard player card: an overall rating and six stats, from the squad's votes

Played Tuesday. Rated by Wednesday. On the card by Thursday.

Every player gets a card with an overall rating and six stats. It moves after every game, from what the people you played with voted.

How the ratings work

It takes a minute after the game, from a link in the group chat. No app to install for players.

  • Everyone who played rates everyone else out of 10, and picks a player of the match.
  • Individual votes are never shown to anyone, not even the organiser. Only totals.
  • A rating needs enough voters to count, so one harsh mark can't sink anyone.
  • Each player's card goes up or down with the squad's votes, week by week.
  • Player of the match, a Team of the Week and season awards come from the same votes.

Why ratings from the players beat one person's guess

Most groups have an unofficial ranking in the organiser's head. It's usually a year out of date and nobody dares argue with it. Ratings from everyone who was on the pitch are harder to argue with, and they move: the player who's got fitter goes up, the one coming back from injury drops a bit and climbs again.

Because nobody can see who gave what, people vote honestly. That's the point of keeping it to totals.

What the ratings are for

Fair teams. The app splits whoever's in into two even sides from their ratings, with the keepers apart. The longer you play, the better it knows your group, and the fewer 9-2 games you get. You can try the picking now with the team generator, using your own guess at how good everyone is.

And something to talk about: a card for every player, a Team of the Week and awards at the end of the season. To make a one-off picture by hand, there's a Team of the Week maker.

Who it's for

One group of friends who play every week, at any size from 5-a-side to 11-a-side. It isn't a stats tracker for professional players, a scouting tool or a fantasy game: the ratings are your mates' opinion of how you played on Tuesday. For the whole picture, see how Squadcard works, or compare it with other organising apps on the best 5-a-side apps page, where several also do ratings.

Questions

Can players see who rated them low?

No. Individual votes are never shown to anyone, not even the organiser. Players only ever see totals.

Do players need to download an app to rate?

No. They vote from a link in the group chat, on any phone, Android included. The organiser can use the website or the iPhone app.

What does a new player's rating start at?

Everyone starts from a rough level they pick themselves when they join. After a few games the squad's votes take over.

What stops a group ganging up on one player?

A rating only counts when enough people have voted, votes are private so there's nothing to perform for, and the organiser can leave a game out of the ratings if it went wrong.

Is it only for 5-a-side?

No. Any group that plays every week: 5, 6, 7, 8 or 11-a-side, or your own size.
