How Squadcard works

Man of the match voting for your weekly game

Squadcard is a man of the match voting app for football groups that play every week. After the game, everyone who played picks their man of the match, or player of the match, from a link in the group chat. Nobody sees who picked whom. When voting closes, the winner is revealed with the Team of the Week, and their player card goes in form until the next game.

A Squadcard in-form card, for the player of the match

Picked by everyone who played, not by one person.

The squad picks the player of the match from a link after every game. Their card goes in form until the next one.

How the vote works

The organiser sends the vote link to the group after the game. Players vote on their phone in a minute, with no app to install. It's part of the same vote as the ratings, explained in how ratings and cards work.

  • Everyone who played picks one player of the match. You can't pick yourself.
  • Picks are private: nobody sees who voted for whom, not even the organiser.
  • Voting stays open for 12, 24 or 48 hours, set by the squad, and closes sooner once 70% of the players have voted. The organiser can close it early.
  • You can change your vote until voting closes.
  • Most votes wins, counted the same way as the ratings: someone whose votes are always far from everyone else's counts for a little less. If two players are level, the one with the higher average rating from that game wins.

What the winner gets

Their player card switches to the in-form design until the next game, with a point added to their overall while it lasts. The result is shared as a match report image for the group chat with the score, the player of the match and the Team of the Week, and never anyone's votes.

Over a season it adds up: player of the match counts go on the squad's table, and the votes feed the end-of-season awards. More in seasons, awards and Team of the Week, and on what the award means and how to give it in man of the match.

Who decides man of the match?

In your own game, the fairest answer is everyone who played. One person's pick is always argued with; a vote by the whole group, kept private, is much harder to argue with, and nobody has to say out loud that they didn't pick their mate.

Who it's for

One group of friends who play every week, at any size from 5-a-side to 11-a-side. Squadcard also handles who's in, picks fair teams from the ratings and gives everyone a player card. Questions

What's the difference between man of the match and player of the match?

They're the same award with two names. Squadcard calls it player of the match, so it fits every team.

Can players see who voted for whom?

No. Picks are never shown to anyone, not even the organiser. Everyone sees only the winner.

Can you vote for yourself?

No. Everyone picks someone else who played.

Do players need to download an app to vote?

No. They vote from a link in the group chat, on any phone, Android included.

What happens if it's a tie?

The player with the higher average rating from that game wins. If that's level too, one of them is picked, so there's always exactly one player of the match.
